With immediate implant placement, you can replace an extracted tooth faster and more cost-effectively.
In immediate implant placement, the implant screw can be inserted into the jawbone during the same visit when the natural tooth is extracted. In so-called traditional implantation, the implant screw is placed only about six months after the tooth extraction.
Immediate implant placement offers clear advantages compared to traditional implantation: the treatment time is shorter, and only one surgical procedure is needed instead of two, which also reduces costs. Immediate implantation can also provide a better aesthetic result compared to traditional methods.
According to peer-reviewed studies, implants placed using the immediate technique are just as durable and long-lasting as those placed using the traditional technique.
The dentist will make an individual assessment for each patient to determine whether immediate or delayed implantation is the most suitable treatment option. For example, a chronic infection in the tooth to be extracted is usually not a barrier to immediate implantation, whereas an acute infection typically is.
Certain lifestyle factors or chronic conditions, such as smoking or diabetes, may increase the risk of failure in immediate implant placement. In such cases, traditional delayed implantation or another treatment option may be more appropriate.
With immediate implant placement, it is possible to perform the tooth extraction, place the implant screw, and fit a temporary dental crown during the same visit. This means there will be no gap in the dental arch at any stage, which can be especially important for aesthetic reasons, particularly in the front teeth.
In immediate implantation, the implant screw is given a healing period of approximately 2–4 months, after which a permanent, custom-made dental crown is attached. The healing time is similar to that of traditional implantation.
