Dental Implants

Are you missing a tooth? A dental implant is a permanent solution for replacing a missing tooth. Implants can be used to replace one or several teeth. We also offer immediate implant placement, which allows the implant to be installed at the same time as the natural tooth is extracted. Book an implant consultation online or by phone. Our appointment number is 09 838 7030.

What is a dental implant?

When talking about a dental implant, it usually refers to a complete structure where an artificial root anchored in the bone serves as a base for various prosthetic solutions. The implant itself is an artificial root, usually made of titanium, that is fixed into the jawbone. It adapts to and integrates with the surrounding bone over a few months.

A prosthetic tooth component is attached to the implant. There are several options available, such as crowns, bridges, or removable dentures.

What can be replaced with a dental implant?

Implants can be used to replace one or multiple teeth prosthetically. Even a completely toothless jaw can be restored with an implant-supported bridge, or a denture can be attached to implant roots.

How much does a dental implant cost?

The cost of a dental implant varies depending on the patient’s initial situation, the chosen treatment method, and the type of implant used. Before starting treatment, the patient must attend a consultation with a dentist, during which a detailed cost estimate is provided.

Implants are placed at KotiHammas clinics in Helsinki, Tikkurila, and Turku.

Who can have implants placed?

  • There must be sufficient bone in the implant area. If needed, bone can be added using grafts or artificial bone.
  • General health must be good. For example, uncontrolled diabetes or smoking may prevent treatment. Implant treatment can be carried out for diabetic patients if the condition is well managed.
  • Oral health must be adequate, and gum diseases (such as periodontitis) should not be present.
  • Oral hygiene must be good. Implants require regular and careful cleaning.
  • Implants are not placed if jaw growth is still ongoing.

These factors are assessed during the consultation.

How does implant treatment proceed?

The patient first attends an implant consultation with the dentist performing the treatment. During the consultation, the dentist examines the mouth and takes X-rays, based on which a treatment plan is created together with the patient. A consultation is always required before starting treatment, unless the assessment has already been done in connection with other care. For a consultation, you can leave a call request here.

Stages of implant treatment

1. Treatment planning and cost estimate

Includes dental examination, full jaw X-ray, and comprehensive treatment planning together with the patient. Costs are also discussed during this visit.

2. Implant placement

At the next visit, the implant is installed. The surgical procedure begins with an incision at the implant site, allowing access to the jawbone. The dentist drills a hole into the bone, carefully matching the size and shape of the implant.

After drilling, threads are created in the bone to ensure the implant fits securely. The implant screw is then placed into position.

Different implant sizes are available, and the appropriate length and diameter are selected individually based on the patient’s bone structure. Typically, the largest suitable implant is chosen for better durability under biting forces.

After placement, a temporary healing screw is attached, and the gum tissue is sutured back into place. Stitches are usually left for 7–10 days. Whenever possible, dissolvable sutures are used.

3. Placement of the prosthetic component

Once the implant has fused with the bone and the area has healed, the final prosthetic solution is created to replace the missing tooth. This may be a crown, bridge, or denture.

After healing, the temporary structure is removed and replaced briefly with an impression coping. Impressions are taken from both jaws along with a bite index, which helps the dental laboratory fabricate the final restoration. The temporary structure is then reattached to protect the implant during this period.

4. Follow-up

Implant-supported teeth require the same level of care as natural teeth. The dentist will determine a follow-up schedule to regularly monitor the condition of the implant.

Required visits for dental implant treatment
